2011 Design Challenge: Against the ElementsChased from their homes by rising floodwaters and forced to seek shelter elsewhere, clergymen Mike Johnson and Mike Pancoast did what seems to come naturally to people in the Midwest. They gathered supplies and headed for a nearby town to help others evacuate.
These stories have been making headlines in the Midwest over the last six months. The area has faced many natural disasters; from severe snowstorms to tornados that level entire communities. The Challenge:Students of architecture, construction management, graphic design, interior design, and landscape architecture were asked to research the recent flooding in South Dakota and explore the various needs of the victims including access to support and aid, prevention, and environmental impact. They were then asked to choose one those aspects and develop a sustainable design response. Downloads:
